After I read this book to a couple 3rd grade classes, several of the kids said they could relate to when Ayana, the main character in my book, stuck her tongue out when her parents kissed. They all made the same face as Ayana as I was reading them the book.
If you could be any occupation other than an author, what would you be and why?
I’m currently a music teacher and love it because I work with amazing children every day. I also would be interested in being a music therapist or a school counselor because I love helping people.
Do you ever laugh or cry while reading your own books? Explain!
I laughed at times while I was writing the funny moments in my book. I actually do sometimes tear up when I read an amazing review of my book because I’m always touched when a reviewer understands the book and it’s message.
What is the last children’s book you read? Why did you read it?
One of the last children’s books I read was “Wish” by Matthew Cordell. That one definitely made me cry! It’s about waiting and wishing for a baby. My husband and I went through that painful process so it hit home with me. I was so touched after reading it that I immediately sent an email to Matthew Cordell thanking him for his wonderful book.
If your latest book (or any book) was made into a movie, who would play the main character?
If “Ornaments of Love” was made into a movie, I’d have one of my students play Ayana. This particular student was my inspiration for the lead character in my book.
Who wrote your favorite book, the one you have read over and over again? What makes this book your favorite?
My favorite children’s picture book that my daughter and I read over and over was “Goodnight Gorilla” by Peggy Rathman. The book has adorable illustrations and the story is precious. It’s about a zoo keeper and a wife who treats the zoo animals like their own children.
